Personal Auto Insurance

Vehicle insurance (also known as auto insurance, GAP insurance, car insurance, or motor insurance) is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other road vehicles. Its primary use is to provide financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise from an accident. The specific terms of vehicle insurance vary with legal regulations in each region. To a lesser degree vehicle insurance may additionally offer financial protection against theft of the vehicle and possibly damage to the vehicle, sustained from things other than traffic collisions.

Arizona is one of the states that make insurance for all vehicles on the road mandatory.  Your only choice is the insurance agent and the company you want to work with and the coverages you want to apply.

This coverage has two parts. The first is the liability section of the policy. It covers your financial responsibility for injuring others and some coverage is required by most states.

The second part covers the car itself: comprehensive coverage reimburses losses from fire, theft or other perils; collision coverage pays to repair losses caused by an accident. Often this coverage is mandated by leasing companies or banks. There are also ancillary medical, car rental and other coverages which vary by state.

Utilizing high deductibles on the physical damage coverages can help reduce premiums. If you carry umbrella insurance, you must be sure that you carry the required amount of basic liability insurance to avoid a gap in coverage for a serious accident.

Keep in mind that even vehicles that are not driven or in storage should be covered to protect your investment in that car or truck.

While different sources list several automotive accidents as the “first” here is a popular story. The world's first automobile accident occurred in Ohio City, Ohio in 1891.  James William Lambert was involved in the first automobile accident in American history. Lambert's vehicle -- the first single-cylinder gasoline automobile, which was carrying Lambert and James Swoveland, hit a tree root, causing the car to careen out of control and smash into a hitching post. Injuries from this accident were minor. Lambert went on to patent over six hundred inventions, mostly affiliated with the automobile industry.
