Commercial Auto Insurance

A commercial automobile insurance policy is required under most circumstances when the vehicle is used for business purposes and meets certain other requirements. It is not just the registration that determines the requirement for a business automobile insurance policy. Other requirements are ownership by a corporation, use in hauling goods for hire, and gross vehicle weight of the vehicle. Some small trucks can be owned and insured under a personal automobile insurance policy under specific circumstances.

Commercial automobile insurance policies are not regulated in pricing, as are private passenger policies. There is price competition between insurance companies for good commercial automobile insurance.

For many small business owners, figuring out what coverage you need for the autos you own and operate is a challenge; after all, you are trying to run a business.

Did you know? Nearly six million traffic accidents occur every year, or more than 16,000 per day. With accidents occurring so frequently, make sure you have auto insurance from a company that will be there for you during a claim.

Business auto insurance can help you insure your work cars, SUVs and Pickup Trucks with the similar features that our personal insurance customers enjoy.  Insure You can insure commercial vans and trailers with coverages customized to your exact business needs.  We can also help you with all sizes of commercial trucks.  You can also get specialized coverages including On-Hook Towing and service center legal liability insurance.  Get Dump Truck insurance with coverages such as physical damage and motor carrier insurance.

Whether you use your own car or a fleet of pickups or box trucks to get the job done, we can give you the protection you need - including liability, personal injury/medical coverage, comprehensive, collision coverages, and much more to help you keep your business moving forward.

At Bennett Insurance Group we can sit down with you and help you determine what deductible amounts and coverage limits best cover the vehicles you use in your business.

When considering your needs for insurance products for your home or business remember contacting Bennett Insurance Group is the right move.  Give us a call at 623-979-4140

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: Desert Caballeros Western Museum

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum, a private non-profit institution, was founded in 1960.  The first president of the Society was H. K. "Mac" MacLennan, former superintendent of schools, a position he held for 30 years. The purpose of the Museum was and still is "To collect and preserve the history, learning, lore and mementos incident to the development of Wickenburg and the Arizona Territory."

The Museum did not officially open to the public until May 8,1969, after what was said to be 20 years of planning. Housed in the building that had once been Brayton's Commercial Company, a general store built in 1906, the property was donated by W. S. "Sky" Thurber. The first curator was Orpha Baker, who was responsible for creating many of the dioramas and models and fashioned extensive artwork dealing with the early Indian culture.

The Museum prospered for several years until a tragic fire consumed the entire building on December 21,1972. Hundreds of items were lost, all of which were irreplaceable. But with typical Wickenburg enthusiasm, a capital campaign was almost immediately underway and a new museum was built.

Built on the same site as the former Brayton's Commercial Co., the new museum, designed by architect Harry Van Hoven, was built at a cost of $319,000 and could boast of over 14,000 square feet. Governor Raul Castro led a parade for the Museum's dedication in December 1975 which hundreds of people attended. The parade was formed under the direction of Hal Braman and was headed by a horseback color guard of Desert Caballeros riders, followed by an antique car with the governor and his wife. Miss Gold Nugget, Cindy Voehl, and attendant Tammy Brown,

In the fall of 1985 the Museum board and staff embarked on a three-year expansion project. Phase I began in September when the Eleanor Blossom Memorial Library was added, along with new offices, increased work space for volunteers, and renovation of the gift shop. The architect was Reed Settle of Prescott. This phase was completed in April 1986.

Park and Sculpture
In July 1987, plans were unveiled for a museum park, which would replace the closed service station on the corner of Tegner and Wickenburg Way. Groundbreaking took place on April 11,1988. The official dedication of the park was November 26,1988. Local dignitaries attended this special ceremony and remarks were given by Governor Rose Mofford and Eddie Basha. The park, built to honor Museum Volunteers, features low-water desert plantings and a nine-foot bronze sculpture “Thanks for the Rain” by Arizona artist Joe Beeler..

Insurance Vocabulary Part Three

Here is part three of our insurance term education. These terms are commonly used. Understanding their definitions can help you understand your insurance options.

Activities of Daily Living - Bathing, preparing and eating meals, moving from room to room, getting into and out of beds or chairs, dressing, using a toilet.

Admitted Assets - Assets permitted by state law to be included in an insurance company's annual statement. These assets are an important factor when regulators measure insurance company solvency. They include mortgages, stocks, bonds and real estate.

Arbitration - A form of alternative dispute resolution, is a technique for the resolution of disputes outside the courts, where the parties to a dispute refer it to one or more persons. the "arbitrators", by whose decision they agree to be bound. It is a resolution technique in which a third party reviews the evidence in the case and imposes a decision that is legally binding for both sides and enforceable.

Case Management - A system of coordinating medical services to treat a patient, improve care and reduce cost. A case manager coordinates health care delivery for patients.

Common Carrier - A business or agency that is available to the public for transportation of persons, goods or messages. Common carriers include trucking companies, bus lines and airlines.

Elimination Period - The time which must pass after filing a claim before policyholder can collect insurance benefits. Also known as "waiting period."

Encumbrance - A claim on property, such as a mortgage, a lien for work and materials, or a right of dower. The interest of the property owner is reduced by the amount of the encumbrance.

Guaranteed Renewable - A policy provision in many products which guarantees the policyowner the right to renew coverage at every policy anniversary date. The company does not have the right to cancel coverage except for nonpayment of premiums by the policyowner; however, the company can raise rates if they choose.

Hazardous Activity - Bungee jumping, scuba diving, horse riding and other activities not generally covered by standard insurance policies. For insurers that do provide cover for such activities, it is unlikely they will cover liability and personal accident, which should be provided by the company hosting the activity.

Indemnity - Restoration to the victim of a loss by payment, repair or replacement.

General Liability Insurance

Normally, it is difficult for businesses or general contractors to work without general insurance. General liability insurance is intended to guard operators and owners of companies from claims that may come from a broad spectrum of sources. These exposures could be just about anything, including liability engendered by accidents from the operations of the insured party, contractual liability, products manufactured by the insured party, etc.

Liability insurance is a part of the general insurance system of risk financing to protect the purchaser (the "insured") from the risks of liabilities imposed by lawsuits and similar claims. It protects the insured in the event he or she is sued for claims that come within the coverage of the insurance policy. Originally, individuals or companies that faced a common peril, formed a group and created a self-help fund out of which to pay compensation should any member incur loss (in other words, a mutual insurance arrangement).

The modern system relies on dedicated carriers, usually for-profit, to offer protection against specified perils in consideration of a premium. Liability insurance is designed to offer specific protection against third party insurance claims, i.e., payment is not typically made to the insured, but rather to someone suffering loss who is not a party to the insurance contract. In general, damage caused intentionally as well as contractual liability are not covered under liability insurance policies. When a claim is made, the insurance carrier has the duty (and right) to defend the insured. The legal costs of a defense normally do not affect policy limits unless the policy expressly states otherwise; this default rule is useful because defense costs tend to soar when cases go to trial.

The liability you select, whether it is one, two, or three million dollars, determines the cost of general liability insurance. Also factored into the rates are the kind of work undertaken, gross receipts and total payroll expenses. Similar to auto insurance, when it comes to general liability insurance, you will first have to make a down payment and then follow it up with installments. Before buying general liability insurance, it is best to compare the quotes available in the market.

It is the business owner's or general contractor’s job to make sure that the people working under him/her are covered by an insurance policy. If for example, a person who is not a part of the project gets injured, the injured person’s lawyer can target just about anyone involved in the project. The more individuals that are involved, the greater the chances of a successful lawsuit.

Insurance Buying Tips

In today’s world, you can buy insurance through a professional middle man/woman (agent or broker), or by calling a toll-free number or going online.  Is there a difference in the service or coverage you get with the different choices.  Insurance is one area that can be very dangerous to do with out the advice of a good agent or broker working for your best interests.

There are different kinds of agents. Some are “captive” which means they can only offer you one insurance company’s products. Other companies use “independent” agents and brokers to sell their products. Independent agents or also called brokers can offer you a wider range of options.

If you’re buying life, long term care or disability insurance, or if you’re insuring a home, business, or anything that’s unique – you’re generally better off finding a good agent or broker to advise you and help you find the right coverage. For more information on properly insuring a home, visit the Buying Tips library.

Ask co-workers. Ask friends. Asking a perfect stranger is better than relying on ads or the yellow pages. People tend to refer people with whom they have had a positive experience. Ask what their experience was in dealing with the agent or broker. Was s/he responsive; was s/he able to answer questions clearly? If the person had to file a claim, was the agent or broker helpful?

Facebook and other social media tools can help you gauge good service and quality businesses. These sites can be helpful, but a face-to-face with an agent or broker is one of the best ways of figuring out if they will take good care of you.

A good agent or broker will be familiar with the products they’re selling and explain ways you can tailor your coverage to your specific needs, maximize protection and minimize cost. For example, a good agent will suggest ways you can adjust your coverage to take advantage of discounts (or credits) that insurers give for packaged policies.

If you have a unique situation or your property or business is considered high risk – you’ll want to find an agent or broker who has the expertise and connections to help you.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park

The Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park, a section of the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Natural Resources Division, was donated to the city in 1924 and a museum was opened on the site in 1929.  At that same time, a Museum Director/City Archaeologist was hired; Phoenix was the first city in the nation to have a City Archaeologist.  The original museum building was completed in 1935 using adobe blocks manufactured on site and scavenged supplies.  At the height of the Great Depression, the City Archaeologist enjoyed telling visitors that the museum was built at the cost of $14.95, which was spent on a box of nails.

A visit today consists of a two-thirds of a mile interpretive trail which travels around the remains of the prehistoric Hohokam people’s ballcourt and platform mound. The trail also features a variety of native plants, walk-in replicated dwellings and an interpretive agricultural garden featuring cotton, corn, beans, squash and amaranth. Inside, view an award-winning introductory video on the Hohokam people. You can also visit the three galleries; the main gallery explores the Hohokam people and their relationship with the environment; the children’s hands-on gallery explains the process of archaeology.

The Hohokam settled at Pueblo Grande around AD 450 and lived in the area for over 1000 years until around AD 1450.  The site of Pueblo Grande supported a population of 1000 to 2500 people who cultivated cotton, corn, beans and squash on over 10000 acres of land.  The people supplemented their diet by hunting local small game such as rabbits and mule deer as well as fishing in rivers and canals.

They traded cotton with other communities located in present day Arizona, New Mexico, California and the Mesoamerican cultures of Mexico.  Common trade items were shells, pottery, obsidian, turquoise, copper bells, and macaw birds.  Shells from the Pacific coast and the Gulf of Mexico were used to make jewelry, including intricate pendants, rings and bracelets.  The Hohokam also produced red-on-buff pottery featuring complex designs.

The Hohokam people are best known for their extensive canal system.  Pueblo Grande was the location of a major head-gate that controlled the flow of water for other smaller communities and field villages located down the canal system.  The Hohokam built the canals without modern engineering equipment and without beasts of burden.  Many of the canals were so well engineered that early settlers of current Phoenix used the canals for their own farming needs and helped to populate the young city.

The Hohokam people were an impressive, resourceful people who thrived in the Sonoran Desert.  The remnants of their life here are now surrounded by a major metropolitan city.  Come visit the museum and see what life would have been like here in Phoenix 1000 years ago!

Motor Home and RV Insurance

As much as you expend efforts to purchase your dream motor home, it is important to select appropriate motor home insurance policy. Legally speaking, you are required to have a certain minimum amount of coverage when you have your motor home registered.

However, there are many insurance policies to ensure that your motor home obtains maximum coverage and protection. It is important to choose a policy that incorporates the recreational value of your motor home and does not treat it as another automobile.

As a motor home or RV owner, you want to make sure you protect your motor home, your family and yourself.  Bennett Insurance Group can find the insurance that brings you the peace of mind with liability coverage, collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. You can also add additional coverage to help protect you from uninsured drivers.

Travel Trailer Insurance

What's the difference between a motor home and a travel trailer? Similar to a motor home, a travel trailer comes with the conveniences of home (sitting area, kitchen, etc.), but unlike a motor home it must be pulled behind a car or truck; it cannot be driven on its own. With Bennett Insurance Group, you can purchase insurance for your travel trailer (in addition to insurance for the vehicle pulling it). Available coverage will vary by state and the type of travel trailer you have.

Trailer Insurance

If you're not bringing your home with you, but do need extra room for supplies, you may be pulling a trailer. Unlike a travel trailer, a regular trailer is not meant to carry people, just luggage, supplies, or anything else you need to move from one place to another! Allstate offers trailer insurance to help protect you and your trailer (along with insurance for the vehicle pulling it).

Unsure where your vehicle or trailer fits in to these categories? Don't worry, talk to Bennett Insurance Group.  They'll help you understand what insurance options are available and what would best suit your needs.

Home Owners Insurance For City Style Ranch Properties

In many areas of the country and especially the Maricopa County area you have what many refer to as ranch lot or ranchettes.  These properties usually include a much larger lot, from a third to a full acre in size.  In some of the areas they include the privilege to raise different types of farm animals.

These animal can include horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, fowl and whatever else the zoning ordinances allow.

These animals can present a challenge to finding an affordable and comprehensive insurance package.

Some normal home owners insurance policies limit the size of the dog you can own, let alone a horse as a pet.  Not only is it common to find insurers who won't write a policy for those who keep horses on the property, but some breeds of dog can have potential insurers running for cover. It's customary to have horse owners boarding their own at home to have personal liability coverage, in case the horse injures someone or gets out and damages property or causes an accident.

You want to be careful that you aren’t looking at a policy that is really intended to cover a larger working ranch with all of the liability exposures that that entails.  Your coverage needs to be greater than a normal homeowners policy but doesn’t need to cover the south forty or the bottomland.

The size of a ranch anywhere is dependent on what is being raised on that ranch. Cattle ranches are larger than say a place where chickens are raised.  You can think of your ranchette in the same way.  How much acreage and what you are raising on that land will determine the cost of your insurance coverage.

Just because the county and city zoning laws say you can raise a cow you might not be able to afford the insurance coverage for three or four Texas Longhorn steers or bulls.

Even the type and size of animal enclosures can affect the cost of your coverage.

Insurance Vocabulary Part Two

We revisit insurance terms that are commonly used. Understanding their definitions will help you understand your insurance policies.

Active Participant - Person whose absence from a planned event would trigger a benefit if the event needs to be canceled or postponed.

Adjuster - A representative of the insurer who seeks to determine the extent of the insurer's liability for loss when a claim is submitted.

Benefit Period - In health insurance, the number of days for which benefits are paid to the named insured and his or her dependents. For example, the number of days that benefits are calculated for a calendar year consist of the days beginning on Jan. 1 and ending on Dec. 31 of each year.

Captive Agent - Representative of a single insurer or fleet of insurers who is obliged to submit business only to that company, or at the very minimum, give that company first refusal rights on a sale. In exchange, that insurer usually provides its captive agents with an allowance for office expenses as well as an extensive list of employee benefits such as pensions, life insurance, health insurance, and credit unions.

Collision Insurance - Covers physical damage to the insured's automobile (other than that covered under comprehensive insurance) resulting from contact with another inanimate object.

Dividend - The return of part of the policy's premium for a policy issued on a participating basis by either a mutual or stock insurer. A portion of the surplus paid to the stockholders of a corporation.

Earned Premium - The amount of the premium that as been paid for in advance that has been "earned" by virtue of the fact that time has passed without claim. A three-year policy that has been paid in advance and is one year old would have only partly earned the premium.

Floater - A separate policy available to cover the value of goods beyond the coverage of a standard renters insurance policy including movable property such as jewelry or sports equipment.

Grace Period - The length of time (usually 31 days) after a premium is due and unpaid during which the policy, including all riders, remains in force. If a premium is paid during the grace period, the premium is considered to have been paid on time. In Universal Life policies, it typically provides for coverage to remain in force for 60 days following the date cash value becomes insufficient to support the payment of monthly insurance costs.

Property Liability Insurance

The general or public liability policy provides protection for claims of liability that are made by third parties. The policy provides defense protection even if the allegations are groundless. In addition the policy will pay any judgment up to the policy limit of coverage.

If you run a small business, what you don't know about business insurance can hurt you.

The terminology used by the insurance industry often is overwhelming, but basically there are three types of insurance for your business: property, liability, and people.

Here's a look at all three.

Property: covers building losses

Basic property insurance covers your business against unforeseen losses due to fire, lightning, vandalism, and other mishaps. Optional coverage can also be obtained (at additional cost) to cover against less likely events such as earthquakes and floods.

Property policies essentially fall into two groups. A "named-peril" policy will cover certain losses resulting only from causes that the policy identifies. An "all-risk policy" covers any type of loss except for those specified in the policy.

The difference is important, one policy specifies what it will cover, while the other identifies losses that it won't. So pay close attention to these details.

Once you decide what sort of protection you need, think about what items you will need to cover.

Since it's a good idea to buy insurance based on replacement value, it's necessary to take stock of your business and list the items that you have, along with their replacement values. Make sure you look beyond the obvious, such as notebook PCs and signs not attached to a building. Once you have the list, decide exactly what items are worth insuring and make sure they are covered by the policy.

Business Owners Insurance

BOP (Business Owners Package)

Business Owners Package policy, commonly called a "BOP" contains many of the insurance coverages needed by most small businesses. While these policies are not standard, there is great variation from insurance company to insurance company; there are certain common elements. The basic BOP offers business property for both building and contents, and liability insurance protection for the operation of your business. This liability protection will generally include both the operation of your business, at its established location, and the liability from your products or completed operations.

Most insurance companies see small business through the lens of the Business Owners Package Policy (“BOP”) and most agents play the same way. What’s fun about BOP’S is that their coverage varies widely between insurance companies (they all have their own flavors). The pricing also varies considerably and they all have some very interesting endorsements that can give you a lot for a little. What flavor is your BOP? Let us help you get your favorite flavor!

Your current business coverage may be several policies for different areas of your business.  Each of your small policies are referred to as “a line” of coverage.  So, with all of these various lines of coverage combined into one master policy you can now pick from a menu of available coverage and have a single policy issued.

This is simpler for you, simpler for the Insurance Company and results in less overall expense and more affordable insurance for you.   In point of fact the BOP is sometimes referred to as the Homeowners’ policy for business which is a fair description.

Some, but not all of the policies, will also offer business income and extra expense protection after an insured loss. BOP policies do not contain all of the coverages needed by a small business. Notably they do not cover any workers' compensation, professional liability, or business vehicle coverage.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: The Phoenix Zoo

The Phoenix Zoo opened in 1962 and is the largest non-profit zoo in the United States. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the zoo was founded by Robert Maytag, a member of the Maytag family, and operates on 125 acres of land in the Papago Park area of Phoenix.

The zoo has over 1,300 animals on display and contains 2.5 miles of walking trails. It is divided into four main themed areas or trails: The Arizona Trail (American Southwest flora and fauna), the Africa Trail (animals from Africa), the Tropics Trail (residents of the rain forests), and the Children's Trail, which includes a petting zoo.

The zoo has been conservation minded from its inception. Soon after it opened it hosted what was thought to be the last few Arabian oryx, which formed the basis of the world herd created for Operation Oryx and eventually allowed the reintroduction of the species into the wild.

The Phoenix Zoo began as a personal project of Robert Maytag, who formed the Arizona Zoological Society with the intention of opening a zoo in Phoenix. Although Maytag died a few months before its opening, the zoo opened on schedule in November 1962. It was originally named the "Maytag Zoo", but was renamed the following year to "Phoenix Zoo" to identify it more closely with the community. The zoo has always been a privately owned, non-profit venture.

Although the zoo had some financial struggles in the early 1960s, it grew substantially during the 1970s as it added numerous new exhibits, landscaping features, and visitor amenities. The 1980s saw continued growth, with the addition of African Savanna habitat areas, a children's zoo, a new entrance complex, and other exhibits.

The zoo expanded again in 1998 with the opening of Harmony Farms, home to a petting zoo and many domestic farm animals. In 2000, the zoo opened Desert Lives, and in 2004 it added a new primate walk-through exhibit called Monkey Village. In November 2006, aquatic species were added to the zoo with the opening of Stingray Bay,. In November 2009, two Komodo dragons were brought to the zoo as a part of the zoo's capital campaign. In April 2011, as a part of the Zoo's capital campaign, Orang-Hutan: People of the Forest, the new orangutan exhibit opened to the public.

Insurance Vocabulary

The terms below are just some of the commonly used insurance terms. Understand their definitions to get the best from your policies.

Accidental Death Benefit: In a life insurance policy, benefit in addition to the death benefit paid to the beneficiary, should death occur due to an accident. There can be certain exclusions as well as time and age limits.

Actuary: A specialist in the mathematics of insurance who calculates rates, reserves, dividends and other statistics. (Americanism: In most other countries the individual is known as "mathematician.")

Insurance Agent: An individual who sells and services insurance policies in either of two classifications:

Independent agent represents at least two insurance companies and (at least in theory) services clients by searching the market for the most advantageous price for the most coverage. The agent's commission is a percentage of each premium paid and includes a fee for servicing the insured's policy.

Direct or career agent represents only one company and sells only its policies. This agent is paid on a commission basis in much the same manner as the independent agent.

Broker: An insurance salesperson that searches the marketplace in the interest of clients, not insurance companies.

Broker-Agent: An Independent insurance salesperson who represents particular insurers but also might function as a broker by searching the entire insurance market to place an applicant's coverage to maximize protection and minimize cost. This person is licensed as an agent and a broker.

Deductible: The amount you must pay before your insurance company will pay a claim. There are multiple types of deductibles, but in general, a lower deducible will have a higher-cost policy.

Explanation of benefits: Explanation of benefits or also known as (EOB) is a statement from your health insurance company that shows what claims it has paid on your behalf.

Claim: An Insurance claim is a request for your insurance provider to pay for services provided by a medical professional or service provider.

Co-payment: A Co-payment is also known as “co-pay” the amount, set by your insurer, that you pay when you receive medical service or for a prescription.
