Bennett Insurance Group Presents: Arizona State Museum

Experience the enduring cultures of Arizona, the American Southwest and northern Mexico at Arizona State Museum. ASM is the oldest and largest anthropology museum in the Southwest, established in 1893 by the Arizona Territorial Legislature.  The museum is the state's official permitting agency for archaeological and paleontological projects across the state. It is the state’s official archaeological repository and is the largest/busiest non-federal intake facility in the country.

ASM administers Arizona’s Antiquities Act and assists state and federal agencies in enforcing related legislation and repatriation.  ASM is the University of Arizona’s anthropology museum and is one of the oldest research units on the campus.  Here researchers from around the world use the collections to expand the frontiers of knowledge in archaeology, ethnology, and ethnohistory.  The Arizona State Museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

Arizona State Museum’s collections and experts are among the world’s most significant resources for the study of southwestern cultures.

ASM holds a comprehensive collection of American Indian basketry, totalling 25,000+ woven pieces of rare and outstanding baskets, sandals, cradle boards, mats, cordage, and preserved fibers representing every indigenous basket-making culture in North America.  It holds the world’s largest whole-vessel collection of Southwest Indian pottery (20,000+ specimens).  The museums houses more than175,000 catalogued archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, 350,000 photographic negatives and original prints, and 70,000 volumes including many rare and hard-to-find titles. ASM curates the artifacts used by pioneering archaeologists to define the Mogollon and Hohokam cultures, as well as the Salado phenomenon.

Arizona State Museum was built on a cornerstone of research more than a century ago. ASM scholars are leaders in the field of Southwest anthropology. Research at ASM cuts across numerous fields and involves many disciplines.

ASM conducts research on late prehispanic migrations, the emergence of the Salado phenomenon, and connections between the ancient peoples of Arizona and present-day tribal communities. It conducts ongoing excavations to understand Hohokam life.  The museum continues more than 25 years of research on ancestral Hopi villages near Winslow, Arizona.  Here researchers collaborates in study and teaching with the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico.
ASM conducts research on the intriguing “trincheras” or terraced hilltop sites found in Arizona and Mexico.  They conduct research on the living legacies of Spanish and Mexican water rights in the Southwest.

Location: Arizona State Museum is located on the University of Arizona campus, just NE of the Main Gate at Park Avenue and University Boulevard in Tucson. The street address is 1013 E. University Boulevard, Tucson, AZ 85721-0026  http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu

Renters Insurance

Even if you don't own a home, you still have a lot at stake. After all, your personal belongings, like clothes, furniture and electronics, have significant value.  From Bennett Insurance Group renters insurance can help you protect that value without breaking the bank. So no matter what, you can rent with peace of mind.

As a renter, you need to protect your personal property against theft and damage. Similar to home insurance, renters insurance protects you in situations that everyone can face: fire, theft, water damage and other unforeseen circumstances your landlord’s policy doesn't cover.  Our renters insurance is hard to beat for convenience and value. Plus, we'll assure you the peace of mind you need for your valuable items and electronics.

While your landlord has homeowners insurance coverage for the physical dwelling, as a renter, you need insurance to cover your personal property, such as clothing, furniture or electronic equipment, in the event of loss from fire or theft or other perils.

Renters insurance can help protect you in case of a liability lawsuit against you. This could occur in a situation where you are held responsible for:

• Injury to another person

• Damage to another person's property

• Whether the incident occurred within your rented residence, or elsewhere.

You can also select policy enhancements and add-ons such as valuable items coverage or extra coverage for your belongings for full replacement costs regardless of depreciation.

Motor Home and RV Insurance

Take to the road in your RV and choose your own adventure. Will you drive to camp in the mountains or to take in a sporting event? You know the great outdoors. And with the open-ended possibilities that lie ahead, the right insurance shouldn't be a question.

We offer a Motor Home insurance policy covering the things that are most important to you whether you’re just starting out with a brief trip, or a veteran full-timer taking all the amenities of home with you. Standard and optional coverages include damage by animals, emergency expenses, trailer coverage and more. Our specialized insurance programs for Motor Homes provides the kind of coverage to give you real peace of mind so you can sit back and enjoy your trip.

Your RV is more than just an automobile and it needs more than standard car insurance.  Bennett Insurance Group offers insurance coverage for almost every type of motor home available in America today. And we provide important standard and optional coverage not available in typical Automobile policies or in the stripped down RV policies offered by other companies.

As much as you expend efforts to purchase your dream motor home, it is important to select appropriate motor home insurance policy. Legally speaking, you are required to have a certain minimum amount of coverage when you have your motor home registered. However, there are many insurance policies to ensure that your motor home obtains maximum coverage and protection. It is important to choose a policy that incorporates the recreational value of your motor home and does not treat it as another automobile.

The freedom of the open road with all the conveniences of home... Does that sound too good to be true? Not if, you're a motorhome or RV owner.

As a motorhome owner consider protecting your motorhome, yourself and your traveling companions with insurance through Bennett Insurance Group. Select the coverage that's right for you and personalize it with special optional coverages. Also, consider purchasing a Roadside Assistance Plan (these are not insurance products).

At Bennett Insurance Group, we cover everything from travel trailers, tow-behinds and Class Cs to Class As and toy haulers. We can even cover your toys, motorcycles, golf carts and ATVs. And with exceptional insurance coverages, you can take that road-trip  with confidence.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: Pilgrim Hall Museum

Normally we feature Arizona museums once a week but, for this Thanksgiving it seemed appropriate to feature one that helps tell the story of where our Thanksgiving story started.

Pilgrim Hall was built in 1824, and is now a gallery museum in the center of historic Plymouth, Massachusetts.  The nation’s oldest continuously–operating public museum, Pilgrim Hall houses an unmatched collection of Pilgrim possessions.  Among its irreplaceable treasures are William Bradford’s Bible, Myles Standish’s sword, the only portrait of a Pilgrim (Edward Winslow) painted from life, the cradle of New England’s first–born, Peregrine White, the great chair of William Brewster, and the earliest sampler made in America, embroidered by the teenage daughter of Myles Standish.

The 17th-century Pilgrims are known through the writings and artifacts they left behind.  There is much more to their history, however, than the 17th-century facts.  There is also the "Pilgrim Story."  That "Story" is the celebration of a few selected moments which have fixed the Pilgrims firmly in America's collective memory.

This Pilgrim Story has grown and evolved over time.  As each succeeding generation looked to the past for inspiration and guidance, certain key elements of the 17th-century Pilgrims were emphasized.  The attention focused on these key elements has sometimes obscured other parts of the Pilgrim Story, changing the perception of the Pilgrim experience.  Often, these later interpretations of the 17th-century Pilgrims tell us less about the Pilgrims than about the emotional and political needs of the era in which the interpretations were created.

When you visit the Pilgrim Hall Museum, you will encounter key elements of the Pilgrim Story that have been celebrated in stories and in paintings: the Mayflower Compact, the Landing, the First Thanksgiving at Plymouth.  Each of these elements of the Pilgrim Story are based on 17th-century facts.  Each element has also received layers of interpretations and celebrations.  These later interpretations are also history -- America's history of the 18th, 19th, 20th, and now 21st centuries.

You are invited to search through the layers of retelling to find the foundation of the 17th century.  Where does it all begin?  And where does it end?  You might be surprised!

Located: 75 Court Street (Route 3A), Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360 - (508) 746-1620 Website: http://www.pilgrimhall.org/plgrmhll.htm

Falls Can Derail Your Holiday Celebrations

For millions of homes, the holiday season would not be complete without decorations, twinkling lights, Christmas trees and candles.  Unfortunately these festive signs of the holiday season also can lead to injuries, and the American College of Emergency Physicians urges the public to keep safety in mind.

"The holiday season is a hectic time for all of us, filled with activities and errands, and many people pay less attention to safety and end up in the emergency department," said Dr. Brian Keaton, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).  "The nation's emergency physicians urge people to take a little extra time and care as they go about enjoying the holidays and remember never to drink and drive."

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, nearly 25,000 people each year get injured while hanging Christmas lights.  People are treated in the nation's emergency rooms each year due to falls, cuts, electrical shocks and burns from faulty holiday decorations or accidents that occur while putting decorations in place, according to government statistics.  The holiday season also means parties where alcohol is served.

The most common cause of ladder accidents involves not selecting the right ladder for the job. When working indoors, a step stool or stepladder, platform or multi-purpose ladder is usually recommended. For outdoors, a taller step, multi-purpose or extension ladder is often more appropriate.

Always check the duty rating of the ladder you will be using and verify the maximum load. The "duty rating" is the maximum load capacity of the ladder. Do not assume that a longer ladder has a higher duty rating. There is no relationship between length and duty rating. Be sure to select a ladder designed to hold the necessary load, including the worker and equipment.

Make sure the ladder is long enough for the job. Climb only as high as the 2nd tread from the top on a step ladder and the 3rd rung from the top on a straight ladder. When working on a roof, the ladder should extend 3’ beyond the support point. When using an extension ladder, place the ladder top so that both rails are fully supported. The support area should be at least 12" wide on both sides of the ladder.

Hold onto the ladder carefully, ensuring that you don't reach out too far to either side. Don't try to move a ladder while you're on it. If the ladder is not positioned properly, climb down and reposition the ladder closer to your work.

Deep-fry Turkeys Can Lead To Home Fires

Each year, families gather around a roasted or baked turkey for the holidays. Some families decide to go outside of the box and deep-fry turkeys for the holidays, which is when things get more serious.

Many people grow up with their family frying turkeys for the holidays. This tradition and special turkey taste is past on to the children. These new families will fry a turkey for their first Thanksgiving together and continue the tradition.

Several dangers can mount from deep-frying a turkey, though. More than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving across the country, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Therefore, in order to ensure a safe holiday season, you need to know how to safely deep-fry a turkey.

Here are a few tips for deep-frying a turkey.

Your turkey cooker should be purpose built for the job.  It needs to be on a stable surface and at least 15 feet away from any structure and completely clear of any overhanging roof or patio.

Make sure that the turkey is completely thawed and dry before frying. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) advises 24 hours for every four to five pounds.

Remember to remove the neck, giblets and pop-out timer in the turkey before frying.

When preparing the turkey, you can season it or buy a flavor-injector system sold in local grocery stores.

Do not fill the cooking pot with oil.  The turkey will displace it’s volume of oil when lowered into place.  You can test well ahead of time using water and the frozen bird to establish your oil fill level.

Slowly lower the bird into the cooker using the rack provided by the manufacturer.

When taking the turkey out of the fryer, make sure the temperature has reached the recommended temperature of 165˚F, as recommended by the USDA.

Always refer back to your cookers manufacturer’s manual for all questions, concerns and instructions.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday season.

Directors & Officers Liability Insurance

Directors and Officers Liability Insurance, often referred to as D&O is liability insurance payable to the directors and officers of a company, or to the organization(s) itself, as indemnifications for certain damages, losses or advancement of defense costs in the event any such insured suffers such a loss as a result of a legal action (whether criminal, civil, or administrative) brought for alleged wrongful acts in their capacity as directors and officers (as to the individual directors/officers) or against the organization(s) (either for securities claims or - if private - other actions against the organizations themselves). Such coverage can extend to defense costs arising out of criminal and regulatory investigations and trials as well; in fact, often civil and criminal actions are brought against directors  and officers simultaneously. It has become closely associated with broader management liability insurance, which covers liabilities of the corporation as well as the personal liabilities for the directors and officers of the corporation.

Under the "traditional" D&O policy applied to "public companies" (those having securities trading under national securities exchanges etc.), there are three insuring clauses. These insuring clauses are termed:

Insuring Clause 1 (Side-A or "non-indemnified");

Insuring Clause 2 (Side-B; or "indemnified");

Insuring Clause 3 (Side-C; "entity securities coverage"). Contemporary (competitive)

D&O policies also provide for Insuring Clause 4 (Side-D), which provides for a sublimit for investigative costs coverage related to a shareholder derivative demand.

Directors and Officers Liability Insurance provides financial protection for the directors and officers of your company in the event they are sued in conjunction with the performance of their duties as they relate to the company. Think of Directors and Officers Insurance as a management Errors and Omissions policy.

Directors and Officers Insurance is often confused with Errors & Omissions Liability. The two are not synonymous; Errors & Omissions is concerned with performance failures and negligence with respect to your products and services, not the performance and duties of management. Generally it is a good idea to carry both Directors and Officers Liability Insurance and Errors and Omissions Liability Insurance.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: Desert Botanical Garden

In the 1930s, a small group of passionate local citizens saw the need to conserve our beautiful desert environment. One was Swedish botanist Gustaf Starck, who found like-minded residents by posting a sign, “Save the desert,” with an arrow pointing to his home. In 1936, they formed the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society to sponsor a botanical garden to encourage an understanding, appreciation and promotion of the uniqueness of the world’s deserts, particularly our Sonoran Desert.

Then Gertrude Webster, whose home encompassed all of what is today the neighborhood of Arcadia, joined the Society. She offered her encouragement, connections and financial support to establish the botanical garden in Papago Park.

"The Garden’s vision is to be the premier center in the world for the display, study and understanding of desert plants and their environments. The Garden strives to be an indispensable resource in the Southwestern United States for helping individuals learn about Sonoran Desert Plants as well as desert plants of the world, so that they will conserve and protect the natural world for the benefit of future generations. Every element of the Garden will reflect excellence, beauty and inspiration to transform the visitor experience into one of discovery and meaning about deserts and desert plants."

The Garden’s commitment to the community is to advance excellence in education, research, exhibition and conservation of desert plants of the world with emphasis on the Southwestern United States. We will ensure that the Garden is always a compelling attraction that brings to life the many wonders of the desert.

It was volunteers who first created the Garden, and volunteers who keep it humming today. Volunteers who share their time, talents and professional expertise are vital to the smooth operation of the Garden, bringing an appreciation of the world’s deserts to visitors from all over the world.

Volunteers were essential in the Garden’s creation and development, when the staff was small and finances tight. These early supporters, including a few amateur botanists who donated their own plant collections, helped plan and execute plant sales, photography and art exhibits, and numerous public events.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance also referred to as LTC or LTCI, is an insurance product that helps provide for the cost of long-term care beyond a predetermined period. Long-term care insurance covers care generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid.

Individuals who require long-term care are generally not sick in the traditional sense, but instead, are unable to perform the basic activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, eating, toileting, continence, transferring, such as getting in and out of a bed or chair, and walking.

Age is not a determining factor in needing long-term care. About 60 percent of individuals over age 65 will require at least some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. About 40% of those receiving long-term care today are between 18 and 64. Once a change of health occurs long-term care insurance may not be available. Early onset, before age 65 of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease is rare but does occur.

Long-Term Care can be provided either at home or in a facility, when someone needs assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing due to an accident, an illness or advancing age.

Rising life expectancy means that the potential need for "long-term care" grows with every passing year of your life. The likelihood is that you or a member of your family will need long-term assistance due to a prolonged illness, a disability, or general deterioration of your health and ability to perform routine daily activities. Most long term care expenses are not covered by Social Security or Medicare, Medicare Supplement ("Medigap"), or private health insurance. Medicaid pays for nearly half of all nursing home care, but you must meet federal poverty guidelines and may have to "spend down" most of your assets on health care.

Long-term care insurance generally covers home care, assisted living, adult daycare, respite care, hospice care, nursing home and Alzheimer's facilities. If home care coverage is purchased, long-term care insurance can pay for home care, often from the first day it is needed. It will pay for a visiting or live-in caregiver, companion, housekeeper, therapist or private duty nurse up to seven days a week, 24 hours a day.  Policy limits will determine the total duration of coverage.

401(k) Retirement Plans

A 401(k) is a type of retirement savings account in the U.S., which takes its name from subsection 401(k)  of the Internal Revenue Code 401(k) are "defined contribution plans" with annual contributions limited (currently to $17,000). Contributions are "tax-deferred", deducted from paychecks before taxes and then taxed when a withdrawal is made from the 401(k) account. Depending on the employer's program a portion of the employee's contribution may be matched by the employer.

401(K) plans are tax-deferred retirement savings plans for employees. The employer sets them up and each company has a slightly different 401(k). They are part of a family of retirement plans known as "defined contribution" plans - the amount contributed is defined by the employer or the employee.

When you join a 401(K) plan, you tell your employer how much money you want to contribute to your account. This amount is deducted from your salary before taxes are applied, so you pay less income tax. More importantly, the money is deducted even before you have received it, making it the easiest savings plan to contribute to.

Your employer may match a portion of your contribution. The money is invested by the plan administrator (on your behalf) in mutual funds, bonds, money market accounts, etc. You decide the mix of investments. They usually have a list of investment vehicles you can choose from as well as some guidelines for the level of risk you are willing to take.

Since the plan is an incentive for retirement savings, there is one condition: if you withdraw the money before you are 59½ years old, you will have to pay tax as well as a 10% penalty fine to the IRS.

Plans which are set up under section 401(k) can also have employer contributions that cannot exceed other regulatory limits. Employer matching contributions can be made on behalf of designated Roth contributions, but the employer match must be made on a pre-tax basis.

Some plans also have a profit-sharing provision where employers make additional contributions to the account and may or may not require matching contributions by the employee. These additional contribution may or may not require a matching employee contribution to earn them. These profit-sharing contributions plus the matching contributions both cannot exceed 25% of the employee's pre-tax compensation. As with the matching funds, these contributions are also made on a pre-tax basis.

Individual Life Insurance

Life insurance from Bennett Insurance Group, Inc. can help you secure your family's financial future by providing the funds they need to: cover burial expenses, uninsured medical bills, pay off your mortgage and other outstanding debts, and maintain a comfortable standard of living.

There are a variety of life insurance policies that we can provide. The kind of policy you choose depends on your needs:

Term Life
Term Life Insurance is a low-cost way of providing maximum coverage for your family. Protection is provided for a limited number of years. The insurance expires without value if the insured lives beyond the policy period, usually 5 to 20 years. Other policy life periods are available, including 1 year annual renewable term.

Term insurance premiums will not increase during the guaranteed policy time period (term) you select. Term Life Insurance pays a death benefit only if you die during that term. Term insurance generally provides the largest insurance protection for your premium dollar.

Term Life Insurance remains in force for as long as premiums are current, provided there are no misrepresentations on the application. The insurance coverage terminates if you discontinue your premium payments.

Universal Life
Universal Life is characterized by great flexibility. Policyholders can determine the amount and frequency of premium payments - i.e., the more you pay, the less time you will need to pay. Your premiums cover the insurance part also the savings or investment element and the expense part. The stated interest on the investment portion changes along with movement in interest rates; moves in 1/4 % interest steps are typical as banks and other financial institutions make similar moves.

Whole Life
Whole Life Insurance provides permanent protection for the whole of life - from the date of policy issue to the date of the insured's death, provided that premiums are paid. Premiums are set at the time of policy issue and remain level for the policy's life. Unlike term insurance, whole life combines insurance protection and savings or cash value which builds over time. Cash value build-up may provide a source for living benefits, for example, helping pay off a mortgage, or a child's education, or cash surrender value if the policy is ever cancelled.

These products are continually changing and we can provide you with the latest information and policies available!

Business Debt and Family Income Protection

Most small business owners must personally guarantee the mortgage on their land and building.

This means that if you, the business owner, should die, the lender may claim both your business and the building; and can claim your personal assets that are not exempt. Also, if you die, the income from the business that helps to support your family may stop. If you die, would your family have the cash to cover your business debts and mortgage and have enough sufficient income on which to live?

A strategically prepared business life insurance policy may ensure continued family income and provide the funds to pay your business debts, while supporting your business through the initial months of your absence.

If you and your family have worked hard to run a successful business, having income protection insurance will help you keep it. If you aren’t able to work, your business could fail, meaning not only losing your salary, but your hard-earned business as well. Having your income protected might just save you from losing it all, so if your salary is the lynch pin in your family business, make sure it’s protected.

In the situation where only one of the parents is making money, income protection may be necessary to keep the family together. When the working parent can’t work because of sickness or injury, the other parent may be forced to take the kids to live with other family for a while. This situation can be devastating for a family unit, especially the children, so it’s important to prevent this from happening.

In times of a financial crisis, often the first thing to go is the roof over your head. It happens all too often that people lose their family home and are forced to downsize just because they became injured or sick. If you have income protection insurance you will still have your income coming in, so you won’t have to worry about losing anything.

If you ever encounter a serious health problem, income insurance can support you and your family, and the benefits are more than just having food on the table.

Partner or Buy / Sell Protection Insurance

If you have a partner in business, you have a need for insurance so that in the event of death or disability, you can buy out your partner's interest without having to take out a loan or liquidate company assets. This is also important where children and taxes are involved.

To look at this coverage from a different point of view.  As a business owner, your business interest passes to your heirs when you die. Although your heirs inherit the business, they may not work in the business and may have no desire to do so. What happens to your business if you die?

A properly funded buy/sell agreement using life insurance may ensure that the family receives a fair price for the deceased's stock and that the surviving stockholders will be able to continue the business. Business life insurance on each owner may ensure that there is cash to pay for the deceased's share of the business.

It is best that there is a plan in place that spells out the choices and clear terms that allow the heirs and surviving partner to understand the transition and use the insurance dollars to fund and pay an agreed to price for the business assets.

The agreement ensures continuity of ownership in the business and fair treatment for both the buyer and the seller. These issues are easier to address when everyone is getting along in the business formation stage, rather than at a time when the partners have opposing interests. The solution is a carefully worded contract, typically called a Buy-Sell Agreement.

Personal Auto Insurance

Vehicle insurance (also known as auto insurance, GAP insurance, car insurance, or motor insurance) is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other road vehicles. Its primary use is to provide financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise from an accident. The specific terms of vehicle insurance vary with legal regulations in each region. To a lesser degree vehicle insurance may additionally offer financial protection against theft of the vehicle and possibly damage to the vehicle, sustained from things other than traffic collisions.

Arizona is one of the states that make insurance for all vehicles on the road mandatory.  Your only choice is the insurance agent and the company you want to work with and the coverages you want to apply.

This coverage has two parts. The first is the liability section of the policy. It covers your financial responsibility for injuring others and some coverage is required by most states.

The second part covers the car itself: comprehensive coverage reimburses losses from fire, theft or other perils; collision coverage pays to repair losses caused by an accident. Often this coverage is mandated by leasing companies or banks. There are also ancillary medical, car rental and other coverages which vary by state.

Utilizing high deductibles on the physical damage coverages can help reduce premiums. If you carry umbrella insurance, you must be sure that you carry the required amount of basic liability insurance to avoid a gap in coverage for a serious accident.

Keep in mind that even vehicles that are not driven or in storage should be covered to protect your investment in that car or truck.

While different sources list several automotive accidents as the “first” here is a popular story. The world's first automobile accident occurred in Ohio City, Ohio in 1891.  James William Lambert was involved in the first automobile accident in American history. Lambert's vehicle -- the first single-cylinder gasoline automobile, which was carrying Lambert and James Swoveland, hit a tree root, causing the car to careen out of control and smash into a hitching post. Injuries from this accident were minor. Lambert went on to patent over six hundred inventions, mostly affiliated with the automobile industry.
