Commercial Automobile Insurance For Your Business

At Bennett Insurance Group, Inc. we offer a complete line of insurance products and services ranging from life and disability income to group life and health insurance. These products and services are designed to provide solutions to your business financial needs.

Do you have a single vehicle or even a fleet of cars and trucks you use for business?  Are you covered properly?

Are you sure?

A commercial automobile insurance policy is required under most circumstances when the vehicle is used for business purposes and meets certain other requirements. It is not just the registration that determines the requirement for a business automobile insurance policy. Other requirements are ownership by a corporation, use in hauling goods for hire, and gross vehicle weight of the vehicle. Some small trucks can be owned and insured under a personal automobile insurance policy under specific circumstances.

Commercial automobile insurance policies are not regulated in pricing, as are private passenger policies. There is price competition between insurance companies for good commercial automobile insurance.

Two of the most important factors that go into determining the underwriting risk on motorized vehicles are: performance capability and retail cost. Vehicles that are commonly considered luxury automobiles usually carry more expensive physical damage premiums because they are more expensive to replace.

Commercial automobile insurances’ primary use is to provide financial protection against physical damage and/or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could also arise therefrom.

The specific terms of vehicle insurance vary with legal regulations in each region. To a lesser degree vehicle insurance may additionally offer financial protection against theft of the vehicle and possibly damage to the vehicle, sustained from things other than traffic collisions.

Who Insured Santa Claus and Other Christmas Trivia?

Did you know that in 2010 Lloyd's of London issued the first insurance policy to protect Santa Claus. The policy covers Santa until the 25th of December in the event of accident and illness, in the run up to and during his worldwide travels to deliver presents to good children.

Underwriters in the Lloyd’s market refused to confirm the existence of the policy or disclose policy details, saying they are devoted to protecting client confidentiality.  However, Santa’s team said Lloyd’s underwriters also created a special 24-hour telephone help-line for Santa in the event of an emergency, which will provide for his immediate evacuation from any location or time zone on earth or in earth’s air space.  The insurance market would also pay for any medical treatment Santa requires in the event of an accident.

"White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.

Accounts vary as to when and where Berlin wrote the song. One story is that he wrote it in 1940, in warm La Quinta, California, while staying at the La Quinta Hotel, a frequent Hollywood retreat also favored by writer-producer Frank Capra, although the Arizona Biltmore also claims the song was written there. He often stayed up all night writing — he told his secretary, "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written — heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!"

The first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show The Kraft Music Hall on Christmas Day, 1941; a copy of the recording from the radio program is owned by the estate of Bing Crosby and was loaned to CBS Sunday Morning for their December 25, 2011, program. He subsequently recorded the song with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers for Decca Records in just 18 minutes on May 29, 1942, and it was released on July 30 as part of an album of six 78-rpm songs from the film Holiday Inn.

The best-selling trees are Scotch pine, Douglas fir, Noble fir, Fraser fir, Virginia pine, balsam fir and white pine. It takes the average farm grown Christmas Tree seven to ten years to mature.

The first decorated tree dates back to 1510 in Riga, Latvia.

Beware of Holiday Shopping Scams

Online holiday shopping scams abound. Every year, online criminals create new ways to steal your money, your personal information even your identity. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified three very prevalent and aggressive online holiday shopping scams to watch out for.

Online Auction Scams
Internet criminals post classified ads or auctions for products they do not have. If you receive an auction product from a merchant or retail store, rather than directly from the auction seller, the item may have been purchased with someone else's stolen credit card number. Contact the merchant to verify the account used to pay for the item actually belongs to you.

Reduced or Free Shipping Scams
Be wary of unfamiliar websites or individuals offering reduced or free shipping to customers. In many instances, a fraudulent seller will provide shipping labels to their customers without first paying the delivery company. Packages shipped with these labels are intercepted and identified as fraudulent.

Gift Card Scams
Purchasing gift cards from auction sites or classified ads can be risky. If you need a gift card, it is safest to purchase it directly from the merchant or another authorized retail store. If the gift card merchant discovers the card you received from another source or auction was initially obtained fraudulently, the merchant will deactivate the gift card number and it will not be honored for purchases.

Avoid Becoming a Victim of Cyber Crime
The FBI offers the following tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of these and other online scammers:

• Do not respond to spam emails

• Do not click on links contained within an unsolicited email

• Be cautious of email claiming to contain pictures in attached files, as the files may contain viruses.

• Avoid filling out forms contained in email messages that ask for personal information.

• Always compare the link in the email to the link you are actually directed to and determine if they actually match and will lead you to a legitimate site.

• Contact the actual business that supposedly sent the email to verify if the email is genuine.

Holiday Travel Insurance

Are you traveling during the holiday season?  Did you know that due to the volume of travelers and unpredictable weather you stand a greater chance to have the travel delayed or disrupted than any other time of the year.  Your chance of taking a completely different trip than your baggage does is also much greater.

Here are some holiday travel tips:

Plan to arrive at the airport or station at least two hours early. The holiday season means everyone is traveling, which means traffic jams and long lines; giving yourself this margin will pay off in reduced stress, and may mean the difference between a missed flight and one caught in plenty of time.

Travel light. Taking public transportation or trying to hail a cab is very difficult at the best of times when lugging around heavy suitcases; holiday crowds increase the difficulty.

Carry essentials, including an ample supply of any medications you use, in your hand luggage. You never know when your luggage will be delayed or otherwise separated from you; it may take several days before you are reunited with your belongings.

Check your departure time with airlines or other services before heading out. Departures and arrivals are often delayed during the holiday season. If you are being met at the airport or train station, remind those meeting you to confirm arrival times. Travel is frequently delayed during the holidays.

Keep copies of your travel information in a safe place. It is wise to have copies with you in case the originals are lost. The holiday season means that most offices function on a skeleton staff, so replacements may take more time than you have. Also, do not forget to carry photo identification with you; a driver's license as well as a passport may sometimes avoid unnecessary delays.

Do not carry wrapped gifts in carry-on luggage, as gifts may need to be inspected at security check points and in some instances they will be unwrapped. Either check gifts or leave them unwrapped and accessible.

Call your insurance agent and make sure your travel insurance coverage and limits are updated.

Individual Health Insurance

Individual health insurance programs are designed for individuals and families who cannot obtain health insurance through an employer. Due to the continually rising cost of medical care, it has become more important to provide health insurance for you and your families. Bennett Insurance Group, Inc. offers health insurance programs to individuals which offer extensive coverage as well as high-deductible programs which are designed to protect against catastrophic financial losses.

As an independent agency, Bennett Insurance Group, Inc. can provide insurance plans from numerous health insurance companies. With the health insurance market changing frequently, we are always on the lookout for quality, service-oriented insurance companies for our clients.

Health Insurance Tips For Changing Times

Check the network. If you have a primary care physician and specialists you like, be sure they’re in the network of any plan you consider buying. Policies generally cover a lower share of the cost of out-of-network care—or none at all. For each plan U.S. News has rated, we supply links to the insurance company’s website. There, you should find a directory of doctors in the company’s network.

Know your share of the costs. This isn’t crystal-ball gazing. Plans are required to state how much you’ll pay out of pocket, through flat fees called copays and through coinsurance, a form of “cost-sharing” in which you pay a percentage of a medical service. When you’re sick, seemingly small copays can add up. And an expensive procedure could leave you obligated to pay thousands in coinsurance.

Make sure your drugs are covered. You’ll want to make certain that the plan’s formulary, or list of covered medications, includes those you take regularly, especially if they are expensive.

Look into annual limits on coverage and services. Thanks to health reform, annual dollar limits on coverage will disappear entirely in 2014. For now, any individual policy you buy cannot impose a limit of less than $1.25 million, an amount that will rise to $2 million on September 23, 2012. But the Affordable Care Act still allows plans to impose limits on services not deemed “essential” and, in some cases, to obtain a waiver allowing them to retain an annual limit.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: The Museum of Northern Arizona

The mission of the Museum of Northern Arizona is to inspire a sense of love and responsibility for the beauty and diversity of the Colorado Plateau through collecting, studying, interpreting, and preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Museum reaffirms the core tenets of the mission established by the founders in 1928:

Research – “to increase knowledge of science and art”

Collections – “to collect and preserve objects of art and scientific interest”

Education – “to diffuse knowledge and appreciation of science and art”

Conservation – “to preserve and protect the region’s historic and prehistoric sites, works of art, scenic places, [plants], and wildlife from needless destruction”

Place – “to maintain a museum in the city of Flagstaff that provides facilities for research and aesthetic enjoyment”

The Museum of Northern Arizona is headed by Director Robert G. Breunig, PhD.  Dr. Breunig joined MNA as Director in January, 2004.

Founded in 1928 as a community effort by a group of Flagstaff citizens, the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) is a private, nonprofit institution that was originally established as a repository for Native American artifacts and natural history specimens from the Colorado Plateau. The original founders, zoologist Dr. Harold S. Colton and artist Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton, who were from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were dedicated to preserving the history and cultures of northern Arizona.

Individual Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-Term Care is the type of care received either at home or in a facility, when someone needs assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing due to an accident, an illness or advancing age.

Rising life expectancy means that the potential need for "long-term care" grows with every passing year of your life. The likelihood is that you or a member of your family will need long-term assistance due to a prolonged illness, a disability, or general deterioration of your health and ability to perform routine daily activities.

Most long term care expenses are not covered by Social Security or Medicare, Medicare Supplement ("Medigap"), or private health insurance. Medicaid pays for nearly half of all nursing home care, but you must meet federal poverty guidelines and may have to "spend down" most of your assets on health care.

The goal for long term care services is to provide assistance and improve the quality of life for those with chronic, long-term conditions or severe cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease. A comprehensive long term care insurance policy may provide coverage for long term care needs in the home, community-based settings, an assisted living facility or nursing home.

The need for long term care can happen to anyone at any time and it may result from being chronically ill or having a cognitive impairment. However, something as unexpected as an accident or injury could also trigger the need.

Health Savings Accounts

A health savings account is a tax-advantaged medical savings account available to taxpayers in the US who are enrolled in a high-deductible health plan. The funds contributed to an account are not subject to federal income tax at the time of deposit. Unlike a flexible spending account (FSA), funds roll over and accumulate year to year if not spent. HSAs are owned by the individual, which differentiates them from company-owned Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA) that are an alternate tax-deductible source of funds paired with either HDHPs or standard health plans. HSA funds may currently be used to pay for qualified medical expenses at any time without federal tax liability or penalty. However, beginning in early 2011 OTC (over the counter) medications cannot be paid with HSA dollars without a doctor's prescription. Withdrawals for non-medical expenses are treated very similarly to those in an individual retirement account (IRA) in that they may provide tax advantages if taken after retirement age, and they incur penalties if taken earlier. These accounts are a component of consumer-driven health care.

A Health Savings Account (HSA) helps you save money on health care. By making you a part of the medical services decision process, HSAs are designed to help you manage medical expenses and reduce the continuing raising of health care expenses. Equally as important, the money you save remains part of your retirement account, even if you leave your present employer. You can also save the money in your account and grow your account through investment earnings.

Funds in the account can grow tax-free through investment earnings, just like an IRA In short, if you don’t use all the money in your HSA for medical expenses, it can accumulate as tax-free savings for your retirement. One final benefit, HSAs can pay for many more procedures than were ever allowed before by government sponsored programs. Health Savings Accounts help you save money on unavoidable expenses and build investment savings for your retirement.

Account funds are used to cover medical expenses before the plan deductible has been met. Unspent account balances accumulate and accrue interest from year-to-year. Unlike amounts in Flexible Spending Accounts that are forfeited if not used by the end of the year, unused funds remain available for use in later years.

Once the health plan’s annual deductible has been met, coverage resembles conventional insurance, typically in the form of a preferred provider organization (PPO) with little-to-no cost sharing for in-network services, and limits on total out-of-pocket costs.

When considering flexible spending arrangements, for your employees, consider that we place your needs for insurance products as our highest priority.  For your home or business think of contacting Bennett Insurance Group at 623-979-4140

Long-Term Disability Insurance

In the event that an accident or illness prevents an employee from working for an extended period of time, the financial impact can be severe for the employee and employers. Long Term Disability (LTD) protection is designed to help cover the employee's expenses while their regular income is interrupted.

Flexible plan design options and benefit alternatives are available to meet specific needs. This valuable protection is available with low-cost, tax-deductible premiums.

Statistic show that 3 out of every 10 workers between the ages of 25 and 65 will experience an accident or illness that keeps them out of work for 3 months or longer, with nearly 60% of these injuries occurring off the job. If an employee is hurt off the job, worker’s compensation will not cover them. When an employee cannot work for an extended period of time, a long term disability plan can help cover a portion of the employee’s salary. Long term disability usually kicks in after a short term disability policy has run out.

Who Pays for Long Term Disability Coverage?

There are a few choices on who can pay for a long term disability plan. Years ago, many companies paid the full amount for long term disability. Now the trend has costs shifting away from this method. Depending on which option is chosen, there may be different costs and tax implications:

• Employer fully paid plan

• Employee fully paid plan

• Shared cost plan

Employers can choose how much coverage to elect for their employees. Most plans cover 50-70% of monthly salary. The duration of plan benefits can also extend for awhile. Some plans only pay out 5-10 years worth of disability to anyone qualified, while others will pay out till age 65, based on a rate schedule.

Bennett Insurance Group Presents: The Amerind Museum

The Amerind Foundation is museum and research facility dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Native American cultures and their histories. Its facilities are located near the village of Dragoon, Arizona in Cochise County, about 65 miles east of Tucson, Arizona in Texas Canyon.  William Shirley Fulton, an archaeologist, established the Amerind Foundation in 1937.

The Amerind Foundation's building was designed by Tucson architect Merritt Starkweather and contains one of the finest collections of archaeological and ethnological artifacts in the country as well as a sizable research library.

According to the Foundation's literature, "Amerind" is a contraction of the words "American" and "Indian".

The museum's permanent exhibits include archaeological artifacts from the Amerind property by founder William Shirley Fulton and later by director Charles C. Di Peso, as well as items found at Di Peso at Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico and other excavations. The objects include weapons, tools, baskets, sandals, cordage of human hair, and cloth.

There are ethnographic items from different Native peoples ranging from Alaska to South America. Items on display include jewelry, baskets, weapons, cradle boards, religious artifacts, figurative items, ceramics and pottery, and art.

On one of William Fulton's visits he heard of Texas Canyon with its rugged vistas and rumors of prehistoric agricultural villages. Fulton purchased the property for his FF Ranch (later the Amerind Foundation) in 1930. After building a home amid the boulder formations of Texas Canyon in 1931, Fulton soon found his annual trips to the Southwest began lasting months instead of weeks, and he soon started excavating sites on his ranch property. What began as an avocation grew rapidly into a full-time passion. As his techniques improved, he began publishing accounts of his excavations in a series of Archaeological Notes published by the Museum of the American Indian in New York. With the incorporation of the Amerind Foundation in 1937, Fulton hired a professional archaeologist and began supporting archaeological research on a major scale.

Fulton believed that one of the few means of interpreting ancient cultures was through the collection and preservation of their surviving material remains. He also believed that contemporary Indian cultures could help to interpret the past, but that many native traditions were rapidly disappearing under the influences of the modern world.
